For the first time in its history the partner of California’s Governor will be known as First Partner, rather than the traditional First Wife.
Jennifer Siebel Newsom, the wife of California’s new Governor Gavin Newsom chose the gender neutral title.
She chose the First Partner title ‘because we’re going to have a female governor someday soon’.
‘It [also] opens up the opportunity for any couple to really step in, and that’s exciting to me,’ she told Politico last year.
Newsom was sworn is Governor this week with his wife’s official pages on the California governor’s website updated today to reflect her new role.
The page outlines her academic and professional career which included helping women entrepreneurs in Africa and Central America.
Siebel Newsom is also an award winning filmmaker. Her second film, The Mask You Live In, explores how culture’s narrow definition of masculinity is harming boys, men, and society at large.
Her experiences working with women lead her to start The Representation Project. The Project aims to inspires individuals and communities to challenge limiting gender stereotypes and shift norms.
The Newsoms have always staunchly supported the LGBTI community.
During his multiple terms as Mayor of San Francisco, Newsom was an early advocate for same-sex marriage.
He also spoke out against gay conversion therapy in 2016 , blasting the Republican party’s stance on the issue.
‘The conversion therapy really disgusts me. It really offends me, and it should offend any right-minded person,’ Newsom said in a Facebook video.
‘People are born gay. They can’t help who they love. These are God’s children and to start talking about using shock therapy, to start talking about doing things to young people to change who they are, that’s about as low as it gets and we can’t stand for that.’
